A Rare Piece of Irish Textile History

This is a genuine antique Irish crochet lace doilies — a form of needlework with deep roots in Irish cultural history. The tradition emerged during the Great Famine of 1846–1853, when nuns and charities taught rural women to replicate expensive Venetian needlepoint lace using crochet hooks and fine cotton thread, creating a lifesaving cottage industry that sold to wealthy markets across Europe and North America. What you’re looking at is a direct descendant of that tradition: a hand-crocheted ornamental mat with a fine linen centre, made in Ireland in the 1940s.

What Makes It Authentic

The lace border carries the hallmark signatures of true Irish crochet — dimensional shamrocks and raised floral motifs crocheted individually, pinned to a pattern template, and then joined together with a delicate mesh ground. It’s a labour-intensive technique that simply can’t be faked at scale. The central linen circle is finished with satin-stitch embroidery in matching floral designs, adding a refined contrast between the structured crochet and the softer hand-embroidered linen. This style was notably produced in Cork and Clones, two of Ireland’s most celebrated lace-making regions.
