A quick Kokeshi history: A simple wooden doll with no arms or legs, kokeshi have been handcrafted for more than 150 years, originally made as a toy for children. Kokeshi were originally from the northeastern region (Tohoku-chiho) of Japan. It is said that these dolls were made in the middle of the Edo Period (1600-1808).
A simple trunk and head with a few painted lines to define the face. Bodies often have a floral or ring design painted mainly in red and black. All faces are one of a kind, although to some they may look the same. Kokeshi dolls are a wonderful Japanese expression of the beauty found in simplicity.
